10 Things to Consider During a Home Remodel

Home Remodel

A clear vision is essential for success

I was certain that I wanted an upstairs master suite and an office space when I first met my designer/contractor. I wanted to update Home Remodel my main floor bathroom, but that was all that I knew. Although it’s fine to not know what you want, it is important that everyone in the project team agrees on the vision. You shouldn’t begin demolish until you have a plan.

This Isn’t a Television Show

It’s not like HGTV’s home-improvement show. Don’t expect your remodel to look exactly like one. The process won’t take you eight weeks. And you won’t be surprised at the final results. You should be kept informed on a minimum of a weekly basis by your contractor so there are no big surprises at project’s end.

Preparation for the Unexpected

It’s possible that unexpected expenses or things go wrong with your home remodel. My upstairs floor was discovered by workers who needed to remove asbestos tiles. Asbestos tiles were found in my upstairs floor. This cost me more than the time and money.

Keep open to changes

Sometimes even the best-laid plans may need to be modified. So be open to changing your mind. Maybe the tile you chose wasn’t available or the exposed beams look less appealing than you expected. Perhaps the wood used to build your bathroom shelves isn’t what you expected. Be aware that you might need to make minor changes to your plans before you start.

Don’t Go Overboard

You should set a budget and stick with it. It is important to be ready for unexpected costs such as those asbestos tiles and to accept a reduction in other purchases. I originally had planned to have a gas fireplace installed in my master bathroom. But, I realized it would cost me a lot more than I expected and I didn’t want to risk any unexpected costs. You can go big. But be aware of what things you will have to compromise on. Ask yourself the following questions: Is it really necessary to have a gas fireplace?

Don’t underestimate stress

A home remodel can be very stressful. It can be expensive and time-consuming. Additionally, it can create a mess in your home and make it very uncomfortable. My family felt it was the best decision to move out during work. For four months, we would have had to use the basement laundry bathtub as a bathroom and would also have lived with a portapotty in our back yard. I would also have no kitchen or a sitting area, and my bedroom would be the only place to rest. You might consider how much your life would be disrupted and for how long. Perhaps it makes sense to rent a house nearby, go on a short trip or move in with friends during the worst weeks.

Don’t rush to do good work

Although I was told that my home renovation would be complete by mid-July I knew it would take much longer. Things happen and sometimes your project may take longer than anticipated. Be flexible. It’s not a good idea for workers to hurry and do a poor job.

Don’t Risk It

You may find some home renovation projects do-able by yourself, but you should be honest about your DIY skills to avoid a trip to the emergency room. For your home remodeling project, if you’re not familiar with plumbing or electrical jobs, don’t know how power tools work, or aren’t comfortable climbing ladders or scaffolding, it is best to hire a professional.

Keep it simple.

If you aren’t absolutely required to make changes after work starts, don’t make too many changes. Although it may seem straightforward, changes can cause additional work and frustrations on the backend.

You can’t start without a timeline

Before any work begins on your home remodel, be sure to have a schedule. A list of items and deadlines should be provided to your contractor. The timeline ensures that trade workers (everyone, from electricians and plumbers to tile and floor installers) know exactly what is happening each week and how long it takes to complete their job.
