The Ultimate Guide to Nursery Blackout Curtains

Home Improvement

One detail that is often forgotten in a nursery is the window treatments. They are often the last thing to be chosen, sometimes because they cost too much or look unnecessary. Curtains are one of the most crucial design decisions you can make when designing a nursery blackout curtains for your baby. Curtains are not only important for their functional purposes, but they can also tie together a whole design!

My clients often feel intimidated when I suggest curtains. It can be overwhelming to know the correct size and number of panels you need, as well as the hardware. These are some tips and tricks I’ve accumulated over the years.

1. Your space will look larger and more grandiferous the higher you mount curtain rods.

2. Curtains should be mounted high up on the wall, close to the ceiling. If you prefer a puddled look, the curtain should not touch the floor.

3. Measure the distance between the floor and the ceiling to determine the curtains length. Add 3-4 inches for hardware. If your hardware allows, you can go even closer to the ceiling!

4. To get the perfect length curtains, you will probably need to adjust them. If in doubt, order more than you think you will need. Your local tailor will be able to do a simple bottom seam.

5. The larger the space feels, the lighter the curtain fabric color.

6. The width of both the panels and the window should be at least twice as wide. Each panel should be equal in width to the window if it is made up of two panels. This might not be possible if you buy ready-made curtains. However, make sure the panels cover your window completely.

Another important factor to consider when choosing curtains is the orientation of the room. This will affect how much sunlight the space receives and what time of the day it will get maximum heat and sun. Blackout curtains are a good choice for rooms that face east or south. Baby will sleep most of the day, which is why it is important to keep this in mind. All ambient lighting, including electronics that emit blue light, should be turned off or dimmed.

Blackout curtains also help regulate indoor temperatures by blocking heat and cold drafts from the sun. This is essential for baby’s comfort while sleeping.

KEEP OUTSIDE LIGHT OUTSIDE

From the moment your child is born, their body produces melatonin. When you are not exposed to sunlight enough, melatonin is released. This signals your body that it is time to go to bed.

Many little children will have moments when they need to nap or when the sun is not yet set. Blackout curtains can trick your baby’s brain to believe it is dark outside, producing melatonin that will induce sleep.

A dark room at the right hour of the day can help regulate your baby’s circadian rhythm, and aid in healthy sleep habits.

If your baby can easily fall asleep, it will make it easier for you to plan their sleep schedule. You will also find them happier if you give them the right amount of sleep.
